44. awardThe functioning mobile phone entitled Frutto di Mare is probably our most successful piece to date. It has won numerous international awards and still arouses interest. Splendor Jewellery won its 44th award at the Jewellery Arts awards competition organized in the United States in the where the phone won absolute first place. The phone was constructed from 14k white and yellow gold. We kept virtually nothing except from the electronic elements of the original phone. The precious metal shell of the phone was based on the shape a seashell from Greece which we embellished with pearls and hundreds of diamonds. The keypad of the phone is made with hand chiseled and engraved rock crystals showing asbestos needles. The phone functions fully, it has a rechargeable battery, a SIM card and attention was payed to adhering to the set radiation limits, signals and the insulation of the electronic parts. While the reconstruction of the mobile phone inside the gold shell far exceeds the boundaries of metalwork and thus was incredibly challenging, the IR port, vibrating alert, volume control and every other feature that characterized the original phone functions as it was intended to. Three of us from Splendor-Jewellery spent no less than four months on the construction of the phone. We worked day and night as well as on weekends, but in the end a we also managed to finish the piece just in time for the competition our profession calls the “Jewellery-Makers Olympics”, the Tahitian Pearl Trophy were we have won with numerous pieces since. We knew that this piece had the makings of a masterpiece creation... but only the first phone we had ever made. |
