Prince Antal Esterhazy's family jewelleriesInitially, we were commissioned by Prince Antal Esterházy and the princess, Svetlana to do smaller jobs for them, but as time went on, much to our joy and honour, we were asked to create increasingly significant pieces for their collection. We are not ones to rush our projects in order to get them over with quickly. Our focus is on quality not quantity, on creating personalised and unique pieces that make even the process of creation more interesting. So we went to museums and had the opportunity to look at and photograph jewellery and other decorative items that were not on exhibit. We searched through books and numerous family albums, inspected the depiction of jewellery on paintings to understand and revisit the jewellery of times past. We also read contemporary descriptions of jewellery items to understand their place and significance at the time. We listened to the Prince and Svetlana attentively to grasp the underlying significance of our task. Svetlana took great joy in helping us design the pieces. We drew the basic sketches together and discussed all the important issues including those of functionality and comfort. We wanted to implement novel solutions and create classically rooted but modern shapes that fitted into the existing family collection. In other words we were faced with an almost paradox situation and a more challenging task than we had anticipated. Naturally, however, we did not allow this challenge to defeat us and were able to create jewellery that we hope will become cherished family heirlooms and part of historic legacy that is the Esterházy family's jewellery collection. By now, we have become friends with Prince Antal Esterházy and Princess Svetlana and have been invited to there residence many times. One such event was a concert where Orsolya was so moved and inspired by the classical music played, that she created a collection called Symphony and a matching bracelet she named Sonnet. Both of these won first prizes at international competitions and have been greatly praised at all of our subsequent exhibitions. |
